LIst of stories

  • Jul. 23rd, 2010 at 1:03 PM
Here's a list, in chronological order, of the Mike stories.  A bunch of them were written before I had a clue as to what I was doing, so...

Absolution
Cygnus 3
Santa Muerte
The Emerald City
...the light shines in the darkness...
When the Desert Blooms
Tenebrae
Burn
An Afternoon Tea
The Journey Home
A New Heaven and Earth
Night Will be no More
Ice and Fire
The Whale and the Vine
New Tokyo
In the Twilight Kingdom
Memorare

Me and My Bobby McGee
stands outside of the main chronology, and it's a series of stories I write when I'm stuck on something else.  It could either be in the normal Doctor Who universe, or in the alternate one that the later stories take place in, namely from The Journey Home on.

Be warned, there are spoilers, if you haven't seen through season 2 of Torchwood or Season 3 of Doctor Who.  Most of them take place in the gap between "Voyage of the Damned" and "Partners in Crime."  There's also swearing.  If Jack's in it, there's plenty of innuendo.

A note about canon:  if it's old series, new series, or in the Big Finish Audios, it's probably canon.  I pick and choose the book canons (I like the menti celesti and think looms are things to tell Time Tots, when they ask where they came from during dinner.)  New series books are canon, as well.

Spoilers for the audio "End of the World" and the end of The Dying Days.  This is a missing scene between chapters 13 and 14 of "Spiegel im Spiegel."  It's also in the Bernice Summerfield universe, so it shouldn't be necessary to have read "Spiegel."  Because the terms of the license Big Finish has with the BBC, some terms are never mentioned in the Benny audios (the Doctor, TARDIS, Time Lord, etc).  I've kept the convention, except for the sake of clarity.

Deleted scenes from Spiegel

  • Feb. 11th, 2009 at 1:49 AM
Chapter 9 is going to be a bit late, so here are a few deleted scenes...I liked both of them and they made up the bulk of Chapter 5.  Anyway, both of these take place after the proverbial poo hits the fan, when Braxiatel and Donna shut down the Citadel over office supplies.  Both of them slowed the plot down considerably.

this first scene is between Maggie and Ada.  There isn't much 'grown up' interaction between the two of them, and I think I'd like to revisit their friendship in later fics.  No matter how strong a friendship, it can't be unaffected by the difference in power between the two.  (It also means I have to post the fic that introduces their friendship.)

Deleted scene #1 )

This next scene was in the TARDIS Graveyard that was mentioned in passing by Ada the next morning after she comes and tells them that it isn't safe for either to be on Gallifrey.  Now, in early drafts of "Spiegel," Margaret was pregnant.  That story arc got cut out early, since it didn't mesh with anything else and was too dependent upon continuity from "Mykonos." I think Vardan, being a sensitive, modern alien, would experience couvade, but it came out as too comedic for this fic.  The brevity of it didn't do justice to the awe, terror, wonder, and fear that new parents experience, and I didn't want to fall into the trap of so much baby!fic.

I liked the scene in the Graveyard, and I thought it summed up post-war Gallifrey.  But I think the final version of chapter 5 flows better in the context of everything that happens after.

Deleted scene #2 )

The Agatha Christie Indult

  • Jan. 30th, 2009 at 12:21 AM
Word Count:  1599
Summary:  In a Brooklyn diner, a Time Lord attempts to change a bishop's mind.  And there's pie.
Warnings:   Swearing
Rating: PG
Characters: Ten, Mike
Genre: AU, Metaphysical Navel Gazing
Author's Note:  Mike is using the word "cult" in the older usage, that is to refer to veneration.  The part quoted from the book is from How to Serve the Latin Mass by Rev. H. E. Calnan (1948).  Thanks to Old Lady for the beta!

And then they freaking pull out the Agatha Christie Indult on me... )

End note:  The same diner also appears in Absolution, the first story with Mike and in After Midnight.

Which New Who character does this remind you of?

It's from the short story, "Midrash" by Ian Mond in Life During Wartime, a collection of short stories in the Bernice Summerfield end of things.  Setting:  it's during the invasion of the Fifth Axis, a human supremacist group of thugs, who wind up taking over the sector that the Braxiatel Collection is in, catching everyone (and Braxiatel) unaware, since the asteroid Brax picked was supposed to be in a boring corner of the galaxy, where nothing ever happens.  Anyway, all aliens (except Brax) have either been shipped into camps or shipped elsewhere.  Brax is under house arrest for the duration of it and subject to various interrogations as to where his "time equipment" is.  This passage happens after Braxiatel tries to poison one of the Fifth Axis commanders, and they bring in a special interrogator.  When this passage happens, he's in some sort of trance.

"I pity you, Irving.  I pity you because I know you wanted to be so much more.  When you were young, you desired freedom.  You wanted to break the shackles of your people and enjoy the wonders of the universe.  You'd no longer be methodical, precise and practical.  Out there, you'd be transformed into a totally different person, both physically and mentally.  You'd actually find yourself a personality.

"But it never happened.  Your opportunity never came.  Or maybe it did and you were too frightened to sieze it.  Others had those adventures for you.

"And so here you are, hiding behind all this beauty:  artefacts and documents and treasures.  You think this is a replacement for a dream you never realised.  But deep down you know it's nothing compared to leaving your own mark on the universe.

"To become legend.

"Because in your own arrogant way, that's what you really wanted to be.  A legend.  A camp-fire story."
